You have many choices in the landscaping field. Here are some tips for you the consumer to help you make the right choice. We hope you’ll find this helpful and informative.

ASK FOR

Certificate of Insurance:
Do not accept a copy of a certificate of insurance from the contractor. A simple phone call to their insurance co will generate a certificate of insurance with your name and address on it and must be sent to you by the contractor’s insurance company. Anything less could be fraudulent. This certificate is important to you if the contractor damages your property. At least you have a way of getting your property repaired.

Certificate of Workers Compensation: Same process applies. This certificate covers you the homeowner if a worker was to injure themselves while working on your property. Without this certificate the worker would be able to seek damages for injuries from you.

How much experience does the supervisor on the job project have? One of the first considerations for landscaping must be drainage. We see so many failed projects due to poor planning or lack of experience with drainage issues .This is a mistake that is very expensive to correct if, you already have a patio, walkway or driveway in place.

Does the company have a certified paver installer from the ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) that will be on site supervising every aspect of your raised patio, patio, walkway or driveway construction?

Will the company offer at least a 2 year warranty on paver installations? Paver projects are intended to last a life time. Most companies will warranty their paver product for as long as you own your home. Most any paver project will look good as a contractor finishes the project. The question is will it stand up to New England’s rapid temperature changes? Without an experienced installer that understands the use and importance of proper preparation you will have a failure.

Is the company affiliated with the New Hampshire Landscape Association www.nhla.com or the New Hampshire Better Business Bureau? www.BBB.org Free ratings and company info available to consumers. You can also check on a business thru the State of NH at www.sos.nh.gov.corporate here you can make sure they exist.

A deposit for work to be done is normal. After all a contractor will schedule his or her crew for that block of time, purchase material and come to your property on an agreed day.

In this economic climate you can’t afford to work with a contractor that doesn’t play by the rules, if they can’t supply the above information you should strongly consider walking away. If they can’t afford insurance and training how will they warranty the project or an accident or damage to your property?
